Position

The Director of Business Development is a vital customer facing role within TMC and drives and manages new business opportunities with customers in the US. In this role the person will focus on leading TMC’s US business development activities, spearhead the acquisition of new clients and projects and closing them, managing TMC’s client relationships, representing TMC at leading conferences, collaborating with internal business departments on proposal development and supporting clients’ ongoing project needs. Reporting directly to the Chief Commercial Officer, this exciting new opportunity to be part of a Commercial team that is customer focused, supports each other, embraces and solves challenges and puts excellence at the heart of everything it does.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Planning:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy to drive growth in the US market.
  • Identify potential clients, and strategic partnerships to expand our client base.
  1. Client Acquisition and Relationship Management:
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities with biotech firms and biopharma companies and other relevant organizations.
  • Lead the sales process from prospecting to closure, meeting and exceeding sales targets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and new clients to ensure long-term partnerships.
  • Bring in a strong existing network of established relationships, leading to closed deals within the first 6 months.
  • Review proposals and analyze requests for proposals and work with Operations and Contracts teams on developing proposals and bid defence meeting presentations.
  • Coordinate with Contracts team and Operations to finalize strategy and pricing.
  • Seek input from Project Managers/Directors to proactively address changes in scope, new opportunities or customer dissatisfaction.
  • Work with Project Manager/Director and Operations to ensure changes in scope are appropriately negotiated with the customer/account.
  1. Market Analysis and Intelligence:
  • Analyze potential opportunities and develop detailed business plans and sales strategies for each Customer/Account.
  • Devise and implement comprehensive business strategies with marketing and BD team to drive growth and enhance market presence.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to senior management to inform strategic decision-making.
  1. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with the UK headquarters to ensure alignment with global business development strategies and objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations, marketing and finance to support business development initiatives.
  • Represent TMC at industry conferences and networking events to enhance our visibility and reputation.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures, including ISO and GXP as needed.
  1. Reporting and Analytics:
  • Work with Business Analysis to track and report on business development activities, sales performance, and market trends.
  • Provide regular updates to senior management on progress against targets and strategic initiatives.

What’s Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Life Sciences, or a related field. Advanced degree (MBA, MS) preferred.
  • At least 7-10 years’ experience in Business Development in a CRO, pharma services company or similar, ideally with broad experience across the Regulatory, Clinical, Medical & Pharmacovigilance disciplines.
  • Proven track record of securing new business and achieving sales targets.
  • Strong knowledge of the clinical research industry, including market dynamics, regulatory environment, and key players.
  • Exceptional networking and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Proactive approach to work, demonstrating initiative and reliability.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to meet with clients and attend industry events.
  • Very organised and structured.
  • Able to meet deadlines and communicate progress; be flexible to adapt if plans change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and rapport building skills to work with stakeholders.
  • Outstanding work ethic and a commitment to meeting timelines without compromising quality.
